Valid licenses are required for all lab software installations. OIT will only install software that has been properly licensed; note that many applications require special licensing for lab use. ‘Demo’ or ‘evaluation’ software is not available in campus labs. There are no exceptions.

To provide adequate lead time for software test/installation, instructors should notify OIT of all software needs at time of reservation. All software installation requires a minimum lead time of two weeks.

Due to high demand, software requests made just before or during the scheduled quarter may be significantly delayed. Instructors are strongly advised to raise installation requests as early as possible.

Login for OIT Lab Computers

OIT lab computers require a UCInetID login. For events with non-affiliated users, after your reservation is confirmed, please request a temporary Group UCInetID and password by submitting a ticket with OIT or emailing oit@uci.edu.

Include the following information:

  • Name of event
  • Room(s) reserved
  • Date(s) of event
  • Purpose of use

The temporary Group UCInetID is to be shared with guests needing access to lab computers.

Please wait to submit request for a Group UCInetID until the OIT Lab reservation is confirmed.

Hours & Access

Labs are generally locked and alarmed outside building/lab hours. Exceptions may be made during peak use periods (beginning and end of quarters).

Access for Scheduled Classes

Normally, only students who are officially enrolled in the class that has reserved a lab may use the facility during the period of reservation. Other students may enter at the discretion of the instructor

Drop-In Access

Labs are open for drop-in use when classes are not scheduled or in session. Schedules are posted outside each lab entrance.

Reservation/Scheduling

Important: Before making a reservation request, please confirm that it adheres to the Lab Scheduling Policy.

Labs may be scheduled for a class only at the actual time the class meets as stated in the Registrar’s Schedule of Classes. If students need more time for homework and TA guidance, they may utilize the drop-in hours after 6:00pm or when other classes are not scheduled.

If scheduling a lab for the entire quarter, please note it will be scheduled during weeks 1 – 10 of the quarter; finals week is not included by default. To reserve time during finals week, please submit a separate request.

Maximum Reserved Hours

The maximum number of hours that can be reserved across all OIT scheduled labs is 20 hours per week per class, or the equivalent of 2 hours per student per week, whichever is less.

For example, a class with 50 students is allowed to reserve labs for a maximum of 4 hours per week (using 25 computer seats per lab). Labs may only be reserved Monday – Friday, 8am-6pm. Labs are kept open for drop-in use in the evenings.

Making Reservations

As reservations are made, OIT personnel will advise instructors to contact the pertinent OIT lab manager to discuss any software, issues, or other needs before lab use.

All requests for reservations must be confirmed by OIT to be considered valid. Reservations for instructional use can be made up to two quarters in advance of the actual class. All reservations for a quarter must be made no later than the the Monday of the 2nd week of that quarter.

Cancellations

OIT recognizes the inevitability of class dates and times changing and will make every attempt to provide suitable accommodations. The lab scheduling coordinator must be notified of cancellations at least five working days (Mon-Fri excluding holidays and campus closures) before the session meets or you will be recharged for the full amount originally agreed upon.

Fees

Software beyond that provided on standard lab computers may be requested. Installation costs must cover licensing and maintenance. A fee of $60 /hour will be charged for any software installations and all requests for software should be made at or in advance of lab reservation requests.

Guidelines for Instructors

Instructor Orientation

We strongly recommend that instructors teaching in a campus lab for the first time complete a brief orientation via phone, Zoom, or in-person (as available) to familiarize themselves with software, hardware, and display equipment before the first class meeting.

Special Arrangements

Class-related special arrangements (e.g., additional equipment, new software, etc.) must be coordinated with OIT with sufficient advance notice. Please contact OIT at 824-2222 or oit@uci.edu with any questions.

Student Lab Time Guidelines

The actual lab time students need depends on the software they are using, tasks they are completing, and their individual experience. Inn general, we recommend instructors plan for each student to have lab access approximately 2 hours per week.

Partitioned Labs (ALP 3600 & 3610, MSTB 210 & 226)

ALP 3600 & 3610, and MSTB 210 & 226 are partitioned spaces that can either be used separately (accommodating 45 students each) or a larger, combined spaces (accommodating 90+ students).

The instructor workstations in ALP 3600 and MSTB 210 allow the instructor to control the projector in both those spaces are the adjoining, partitioned ALP 3610 and MSTB 226 spaces respectively.
