Software

Valid licenses are required for all software installations. OIT will only install software that has been properly licensed; note that many applications require special licensing for lab use. ‘Demo’ or ‘evaluation’ software is not available in campus labs or classrooms. There are no exceptions.

To provide adequate lead time for software test/installation in computer labs, instructors should notify OIT of all software needs at the time of making a lab reservation. All software installation requires a minimum lead time of two weeks and the more lead time possible, the better!

Due to high demand, software requests made just before or during the scheduled quarter may be significantly delayed. Instructors are strongly advised to raise installation requests as early as possible.

Classroom and lab computers are configured with standard sets of software. Specialized software may be available in some locations.

Scheduling / Reserving Labs

Important: Before making a reservation request, please confirm that it adheres to the Lab Scheduling Policy.

Labs may be scheduled for a class only at the actual time the class meets as stated in the Registrar’s Schedule of Classes. If students need more time for homework and TA guidance, they may utilize the drop-in hours after 6:00pm or when other classes are not scheduled.

If scheduling a lab for the entire quarter, please note it will be scheduled during weeks 1 – 10 of the quarter; finals week is not included by default. To reserve time during finals week, please submit a separate request.

To schedule a lab for a class:

  1. Review the lab’s schedule
  2. Complete the lab request form

Cancellations & changes

OIT recognizes the inevitability of class dates and times changing and will make every attempt to provide suitable accommodations. The lab scheduling coordinator must be notified of cancellations at least five working days (Mon-Fri excluding holidays and campus closures) before the session meets or you will be recharged for the full amount originally agreed upon.

Fees

Computer access

The lectern PCs in all classrooms and all lab computers require a UCInetID login. For events with non-affiliated users, after your reservation is confirmed, please request a temporary group UCInetID and password by submitting a ticket with OIT or emailing oit@uci.edu.

Include the following information:

  • Name of event
  • Room(s) reserved
  • Date(s) of event
  • Purpose of use

The temporary group UCInetID is to be shared with guests needing access to lab computers.

Please wait to submit request for a group UCInetID for lab use until the scheduled OIT lab reservation has been confirmed.

Orientations

We offer in-person orientations in campus classrooms for faculty, instructors, TAs, and other teaching staff.

We strongly recommend that instructors teaching in a campus computer lab for the first time complete a brief orientation via phone, Zoom, or in-person (as available) to familiarize themselves with software, hardware, and display equipment before the first class meeting.

To request a classroom or lab orientation, please contact us.

Miscellaneous

Special Arrangements

Class-related special arrangements (e.g., additional equipment, new software, etc.) must be coordinated with OIT with sufficient advance notice. Please contact OIT at 824-2222 or oit@uci.edu with any questions.

Partitioned Labs (ALP 3600 & 3610, MSTB 210 & 226)

ALP 3600 & 3610, and MSTB 210 & 226 are partitioned spaces that can either be used separately (accommodating 45 students each) or as larger, combined spaces (accommodating 90+ students).

The instructor workstations in ALP 3600 and MSTB 210 allow the instructor to control the projector in both those spaces separately or as a combined space with the partitions opened.

Classroom Technologies staff manage the schedule for opening and closing the partitions. The partitions should not be operated otherwise. For questions about scheduling partitionon open/close, please contact us.

Assistance

Every classroom has a phone installed near the lectern or instructor station with Classroom Technologies’ contact information posted prominently.

Instructors can dial 48833 from that phone (or 949-824-8833 from any phone) to reach our help line so we can assist as promptly as possible. For less urgent/immediate needs, please email smartclassrooms@uci.edu or use our webform.
